Hi,
when I try to go into control panel>speech I get the following.
An exception occurred while trying to run "C:WINDOWSsystem32shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedSpeechsapi.cpl",Speech"
I am able to locate the sapi.cpl, but not the others. sapi 5 works fine with Jaws. it's only when I try to access speech properties that I run into this error.

You will most likely need your original installation media unless you are happy to go hunting for files.
Go into your c:windowsinf folder, locate sapi5.inf, right click, and select install.
This ought to fix the problem.
Cheers

No sign of that file anywhere. I even performed a search and turned up nothing. Is there a place I can download it?
I have another, but unrelated issue. I wont get in to that right now. Perhaps I should make a topic called Jean's computer Problems. I seem to have a lot of them.

lol maybe something from kitchensinc.net would help. they have the full sapi 5 installer as well as a repair file.

Were it me.
I'd do a search on google for sdk51 and for spchcpl.exe install both of these products from MS and you'll probably be up and working.
When looking for the sdk51, you'll get a page on microsoft with several files, and you want the one that is like 67mb or so.
Give that a shot and let us know.

I downloaded the above files, and still noting.
My computer thinks that the sapi5 repair is a virus. Odd.

odd in deed, but there are a few options available at your disposal.
1. reinstall your computer. (least-recommended)
2. kick your computer with your boots until it breaks, after which you can bring it into tech support and say how it broke and you need it fixed (here, include the problem with the speech control panel too). (not recommended but duable)
and finally, as was stated in post #2, depending on your operating system:
windows xp - locate your installation disk (if any). Any XP install disk will be ok. (I recommend, though, that you use a CD which has the same service pack files as your copy of XP is running - the current Service pack for XP is sp3.).
Enter the i386 folder and look for a sapi.cp_ file. if it is not in i386, use a search option of your choice and look for sapi.cp_. once you have located it, copy the file to your clipboard, and paste it to your desktop or a folder you want to have it in.
Right click the file (sapi.cp_) and click rename. Name it sapi.cab.
Now open this cab file. Inside you should find sapi.cpl. go back to the folder which was referenced in the error and paste this cpl file in there.

If using Windows Vista:
simply delete the sapi.cpl file, and Windows File protection should (SHOULD) start. Note: if this does not occur (in case Windows File protection was disabled by any means), I am not responsible for the loss of your file. When deleting, please use the delete key to send the file to recycle bin instead of shift+delete.

if using Windows 7, you can due the same as for Vista, or use the options in recovery to completely reinstall your computer to factory state.

Hope that helps

Tomi

The Windows disk is currently somewhere in storage because I move back and forth across the country quite a bit. I have the Sapi.cpl file in the Windows shared folder.
I tried downloading the the Sapi5 repair, which is called deluserlex.exe, but my computer thinks it's a virus. In fact, I get 2 warnings. The file is probably safe, but I don't know if I want to take the chance still.
I guess I'm out of luck then. I hope whatever voice I picked when the properties was working is a good one.
